Montessori Curriculum

The first few years of a child's preschool are crucial for their lifelong development. Twinkles' Early Years programme, based on the Montessori Curriculum, aims to provide a solid foundation for future academic success, and social and emotional well-being. The program focuses on producing well-rounded children through tailored learning programs suitable for all ages. It prepares children for life's journey with confidence through formal and informal Early Childhood Learning programs. Recognizing that each child is unique, the programme includes activities that develop gross and fine motor skills, promote self-expression, and encourage exploration. The environment emphasizes love, security, and the celebration of individual uniqueness.

  What is Montessori ?

Montessori is an education philosophy and practice that fosters rigorous, self-motivated growth for children in all areas of their development with a goal of nurturing each child’s natural desire for knowledge, understanding, and respect based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and collaborative play.

  Using Montessori Materials

Montessori education focuses on the hands-on approach to learning and the use of specially designed learning materials. These materials are designed to stimulate children’s senses of touch, sight, and sound, facilitating engagement, and learning through sensory exploration. By teaching only one skill at a time, Montessori materials provide children with ample opportunity to practice and perfect key learning outcomes through repetition. This approach supports children in mastering each skill before moving on to the next, thereby fostering a strong foundation for lifelong learning. The materials follow a logical, developmentally appropriate progression that allows the child to develop an abstract understanding of a concept.

  Benefits of Montessori Materials

The Montessori materials offer many benefits for children’s learning and development. These materials offer children hands-on learning opportunities, empowering them to explore and discover independently. This helps build children’s confidence and independence, as they can work through problems independently.

The Montessori materials also help children to develop a love of learning. The materials are designed to be engaging and fun, providing children with a positive learning experience. This helps to foster a love of learning that can last a lifetime.

In conclusion, the Montessori materials facilitate the acquisition of many skills, such as practical life skills, sensory skills, mathematical skills, language skills, and cultural awareness. The cultivation of these skills lays a robust foundation for future growth and development.

  Our Subjects

  Language

Language and literacy are a core part of the Montessori curriculum. Montessori education focuses on fostering a love for language and literature in children. This approach not only helps children to become proficient readers but also lays a foundation for lifelong learning.

Our Montessori approach at TWINKLES emphasizes oral language development from an early age, building a strong foundation for learning to read and write as it is phonics-based, thus our use of jolly phonics approach to reading.

Under language, we have listening, speaking, reading, writing.

We use Montessori materials like sand paper letters, large movable alphabet, picture boxes, the blue series, flash cards and many others.

As they progress, children build on these skills to create simple sentences. Materials such as the Metal Insets teach children proper pencil grip and control. Finally, oral language skills are nurtured through social interactions, group activities, and lessons in grace and courtesy.

  Mathematics

Under Montessori, we believe that children learn math concepts more easily when they are presented in a concrete, hands-on way, rather than through abstract instruction. This means that children use manipulatives such as beads, blocks, and cubes, to understand math concepts before they move to more abstract concepts.

The Mathematics Montessori materials are designed to help children develop their mathematical skills. The materials allow children to explore and understand abstract mathematical concepts through hands-on exploration. They aid children in acquiring foundational mathematical skills, including numeral recognition, counting, and matching numerals and quantities. Additionally, these materials foster an understanding of key mathematical operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The Mathematics materials also help children to develop their problem-solving skills. The materials require children to work through problems logically and systematically, which helps to build their critical thinking skills.

We use number rods, sand paper numbers, the spindle box, cards and counters, the short bead stair to mention but a few.

  Practical Life

The Montessori Practical Life activities are a series of exercises designed to formally introduce the child to familiar everyday routines he or she sees adults carrying out on a daily basis. It is a combination of specific lessons and real life experiences. These activities teach the children the steps to take, the materials to use, and the skills they need to “do it by themselves. “All this through helping them develop logical thinking.

The Practical Life materials are children’s first materials in the Montessori classroom. They are designed to help children develop practical life skills, such as pouring, sorting, and buttoning. These skills are essential for independence and self-care.

The Practical Life materials also help children to develop their concentration and focus.

Here we have activities for fine motor skills, self-care, care for the environment and people. Under practical life, we use materials like pegs, scissors, the dressing frames, locks and keys, nuts and bolts, sorting rice or beans etc.

We also have cookery were we have simple cooking skills like baking and setting the table. All these activities aim at developing concentration of the child, build and expand a child’s vocabulary, lead to independent behavior, nurture confidence, instill self-discipline etc.

  Sensorial

The sensorial area in a Montessori classroom focuses on lessons and activities that help to develop the five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. The lessons and activities provided in the sensorial area of the classroom help children clarify, classify, and understand the world around them.

The purpose of sensorial activities is to help children to sort out the different impressions given by the senses. At TWINKLES MONTESSORI PRE SCHOOL, these materials are specifically designed to help children develop skills for discrimination, order, and to broaden and refine the senses. So let’s dive right into outlining the definition of Montessori sensorial materials, their purpose, and ways to reinforce some of the things learned in the classroom to the home setting.

The Sensorial materials are intended to enhance children’s sensory skills. The materials allow children to explore and compare shapes, textures, colors, smells, tastes, and sounds.

  Cosmic

Cosmic education refers to the philosophy coined by Dr. Maria Montessori, which says that all things are interconnected in this universe and that each living thing has a specific role or cosmic task to carry out.

Cosmic encompasses various subjects, including geography, history, science, and the arts. The young learners are introduced to animals, plants, science, history, geography, music.

The Montessori materials enable children to discover and appreciate diverse cultures and traditions, fostering a sense of respect and empathy towards others. They also help children to develop their research and inquiry skills. The materials encourage children to ask questions, explore new ideas, and discover answers for themselves.
